What is an Indian Head Massage?

Indian Head Massage, also known as Champissage, is an ancient Ayurvedic therapeutic practice originating in India over 1,000 years ago.  Ayurvedic means that this practice is based on the principle that health depends on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. It is a holistic treatment that focuses on massaging acupressure points on the head, face, neck, and shoulders to rebalance body energy and promote deep relaxation.

Indian Head Massages are rooted in female history where mothers would give their daughters head massages as part of their cultural heritage.  This practice and the wisdom behind it was passed on from generation to generation.

Over time, it became common for barbers to offer Indian Head Massages to their clients before cutting hair, a service that is still offered today.

Benefits of a Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage offers a wide range of physical and mental health benefits by focusing on the areas most vulnerable to stress, such as the shoulders, neck, scalp, and face.

 Mental & Emotional Benefits

  • Stress and Anxiety Relief: The rhythmic movements stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, helping to lower cortisol (stress hormone) while boosting serotonin and dopamine.
  • Enhanced Mental Clarity: By increasing oxygen and blood flow to the brain, the massage can reduce mental fatigue and improve concentration, focus, and memory.
  • Improved Sleep Quality: Deep relaxation helps regulate the sleep cycle, making it a popular remedy for insomnia and restless nights.
  • Emotional Balance: The treatment works on the three higher chakras to rebalance the body's energy levels and promote a sense of grounding.

Physical Benefits

  • Headache and Migraine Relief: Releasing muscle stiffness in the upper back, neck, and temples helps alleviate tension headaches and can reduce the frequency of migraines.
  • Scalp and Hair Health: Stimulating the scalp increases blood flow to hair follicles, which can encourage healthier hair growth and distribute natural oils for improved texture and shine.
  • Lymphatic Drainage: Gentle manipulation around the neck and head aids the body's natural detoxification process, helping to remove toxins and reduce puffiness or swelling.
  • Eye and Sinus Relief: Targeted pressure on points around the forehead and eyes can ease eye strain from screen use and help drain fluid to relieve sinus congestion.
  • Tension Release: It is particularly effective for desk workers, as it targets "knots" and deep-seated tension caused by poor posture.

Contraindications

My priority is always assuring my client's wellbeing and so it is highly important that you are aware that some holistic treatments may not be a benefit to you if you have certain medical conditions.

If you are unsure whether you are able to receive an Indian Head Massage, please consult your doctor before booking a treatment.

You should not receive an Indian Head Massage if you have:

  • Fever or Contagious Illness: Massage increases circulation, which can spread infection or make a fever worse.  We aim to avoid passing on contagious illness.
  • Recent Head or Neck Injury: Includes whiplash, concussion, or skull fractures (usually within the last 6 months).
  • Scalp Infections: Such as weeping eczema, active psoriasis, or fungal infections (e.g., ringworm) to prevent spreading.
  • Intoxication: Being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Recent Surgery: Any recent operation on the head, neck, or upper back.
  • Cosmetic Treatment (e.g. botox): Massage can interfere with the placement of the botox.  Treatment can be given after 3 weeks of cosmetic surgery.
  • Hair Extensions: The oils and nature of the treatment can damage hair extensions.
  • Undiagnosed Illness and Awaiting Medical Investigation: Until you have a clear understanding from a medical professional what may be causing your symptoms or illness, it is best to wait and delay having an Indian Head Massage.
  • Recent Surgery: It is not advisable to have an Indian Head Massage if you have had recent surgery to your upper back, shoulders, neck, head or upper chest.  It is best to be completely healed and recovered before booking a treatment.

Medical Conditions where a Doctor's Approval is Needed

If you have any of the following, seek medical advice before booking:

  • Epilepsy: Deep relaxation or specific pressure points can occasionally trigger a seizure.
  • Cancer: To ensure the increased lymphatic drainage does not interfere with ongoing treatments.
  • Osteoporosis or Arthritis: Specifically in the neck (cervical spine) or shoulders.
  • Diabetes: Massage can affect blood sugar levels; it is best to monitor yourself closely after a session.
  • Pregnancy: Generally safe after the first trimester, but please consult your midwife or consultant first.

Please Note:

I am a holistic practitioner, not a medical professional so I will never give a diagnosis or recommend that you pause or stop prescribed medication or treatment.  You must always follow the guidance of your doctor.
